I'm so in love with my hair... it ain't funny. Can you imagine when I finally install SL how much better it will be?
I've worn afro, twists, coils, banded twists and so on. I'll wear it twisted for a week, pull the twists out and there goes a curly afro for another week. I wash again and repeat the same process. It's great. And I have been using flowers and so on to accentuate my hair for formal occasions or going to church etc.
Costs
I've also discovered that no matter what u do to your hair, it has to be maintained. Oft than not you can't do it yourself. I used to wash and twist my own hair and it would take several hours to do so I normally dedicate a day to dealing with my hair. However, the last time I did that the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome kicked into my right hand again and for weeks my hand was alomst rendered useless. So I have to resort to using a hairdresser again.
Hence, "u coulda deal yuh haffi pay smaddy fi look afa yuh head" (no matter what you have to get someone to take care of your hair).
Specialty
Another most important thing I've discovered is that not everyone who says "hairdresser", knows how to handle our kinky hair. Nowadays, many women have decided to go natural and so more and more hairdressers are offering their services to groom natural hair. However, not all of them really know about kinky hair and how to treat it. I went to a hairdresser who really handled my kinky hair as though it was permed and my neck and every folicle on my head felt the tugs and pulls of her trying to comb out my hair and when she used the blow dryer!. First of all she wanted to comb through my hair before washing it. I told her Hell to the NO, that wasn't going to work. I told her to wash it as is and when she conditions it she can try to comb it out. So she did that and said "You know it's true, it's easier this way". I was like "duh"! Then she tryed to blow it out and it was agony again. She did do a good job of the twists and cornrow as can be seen in this pic but the pain is too much.
I decided that I'm going to look for a hairdresser that does only natural hair cause they should understand it better and I was right. The last time I went to a girl who had started her own locs and had a parlour that dealt only with natural hair. She groomed my mom's colleagues hair and I've always admired her hair so she recommended her (Christine). Now Christine was very understanding, careful with my hair and showed fully well that she knew what she was doing. I don't know what she did but believe me when I say from start (shampooing) to finish (walking out with twists) I didn't feel one tug. My head wasn't sore. I felt relaxed like I'd do it all again.
I had to ask her how she did it and she told me while shampooing she used her fingers to try and work out some of the knots. While conditioner was in my hair she used a brush to brush the hair instead of combing it and she knew how to hold on to the hair so I felt nothing. When she got to the point of blow drying she could have combed right through with it and I felt no knots or tugging. I couldn't believe it. I am and was most satisfied. I gladly paid her. Christine will be seeing me until I get SL installed. She does locing too and claims to do SL but upon questioning her I know that she doesn't know what sisterlocks is. I mean alot of people do locks in Ja. and call it SL. They do interlocking and palm rolling and all sorts of things and they call them sisterlocks. Ofcourse doing it with her would be cheaper but I want the real thing. So even though Christine is nice and knows her craft I would not have her install locs for me.
